Vitaly y su Timba Habanera.... are releasing a new album... and following it up with a major European tour! |

Cuban concept "Vitali y su Timba Habanera" are releasing a new album – at long last! Their first album, "Desnudar tu Cuerpo", was released in 2001. That album has its own little story which I have recounted a few times on the website and in some newsletters. In case you missed it, click here to read how I tracked down a copy of the album: Ukrainian musician and composer Vitali Osmachko, the band leader, went to Cuba in the late 90’s and was, like so many before him, captured by the musical vigour and the Cuban musicians’ special ability to constantly renew themselves and re-combine their skills without regards for existing band boundaries. |
The first album, "Desnudar tu Cuerpo”, regrettably never really made it. Rather strange, because I find it to be one of the best produced albums ever – well composed tracks throughout, but with a delicate and refined understanding of each tune, which surprises you in each track. I do not know much about the lyrics as my Spanish knowledge is extremely limited – I must leave such analyses of the writer’s expressions to others. But I maintain my regret that this album never had the breakthrough it really deserves. It is my big hope, however, that the coming album (I do not know its name yet) may now lead the way for the former, so that more people will want to listen to it.
Around Christmas, Vitali trusted me with the information that a new album was underway – but as it was still in its very early days of production and not all deals had been finalised – I had to promise to keep my mouth shut ;-) I feel very proud and honoured to have been entrusted so early with a piece of salsa news which to me is one of the greatest in recent times. I have listened in on a very, very early demo recording of one of the new tracks – I admit that on that day I caught myself dancing around my living room with my head in the clouds – unfortunately, that demo cannot be played in a salsa club :-((((( But even though it was “just” a synthesizer version, I could still sense both the melody and the composition in the music – that which I believe Vitali masters to perfection: His ability to capture a melody in such a way that you cannot help but coming back to find new phrases and discover new intricacies and refined details in each and every one. If I must compare Vitali’s talent for composition to the work of any other artist – it would have to be Issac Delgado’s "En primerea la Plana" – Delgado also has the ability to bring out beautiful harmonies and create a refined and well composed melody – without ending up with the flavour of yesterday which tires the listener after a few replays.
Dancewise, the first album, “Desnudar tu Cuerpo”, was rather laid back – and I happen to know that the new release is going to be more up-beat. Besides that, Vitali remains very secretive about the new album (trust me, I have been pestering him for more info :-) and who contributes to it – maybe because some formalities still need to be settled here and there. I have my suspicions, though, and also hope there are a number of reappearances from the first album… among others, I have high hopes that our “almost native Danish Cuban” Alexander Abreu (Grupo Danson / Havana D’primera) has contributed, and I also hope he might have voiced a few tracks :-) … However, I DO know that Giraldo Piloto and Alberto Alberto wrote the lyrics – so I would be surprised if Piloto did not join the percussionists somewhere along the way or if Alberto Alberto did not sing a couple of songs. Either way and almost no matter who has played along I am certain the album will be excellently produced and my expectations are sky high :-)
In the middle of a chat session one rainy Sunday afternoon, Vitali suddenly writes: Salsani, can I ask you a question? (HELL, YES – I think – you can ask me any question you want… :-))). Could you tell me which festival organizers you have in Denmark…? I hesitate a moment and think… Why, now? And a smile curls my lips… Of course… Vitali is organizing a tour to promote the new album… and if I have to take out a bank loan, Vitali MUST come to Århus(my town) – I’ll be damned if I don’t make that happen :-) It will become the greatest salsa event of the year – and probably many years to come – for me and hopefully for all the rest of you too… It is one thing to hear a great album, it is something completely different to hear it all performed LIVE… and watch your idol on stage. The album is planned for release in May or June and I suspect a concert some time this Summer is a possibility ;.-)... Uuuuuuuh, I can’t wait!!!! |
Other great news.....

Haila has released a new album – I have been through it a couple of times now and found a couple of nice tracks – a new remix of Quién Fue is also included, a rather pop version, though. You can hear sample clips on Prodland click here… - my good friend Ricky, who is a big fan of Haila, has promised to bring an excellent review of the album (most likely totally biased as he is a mega fan)… |
Tirso Duarte also released a new album… "Fin Del Juego”, and I fell for it right away… good, dance friendly tracks and especially "La madre Maria” has been well received on the dance floor. Tirso D. – who is originally a band member of Pupy’s – released the album “Pan con chocolat” with Michel Perez last year. At first, I was somewhat disappointed with this somewhat club-unfriendly album – but now the CD occupies my CD player at home rather often, nevertheless – so it is good for just listening. The new album, on the other hand, is very up-beat with good melodies… and the dance floor crowd loves it!!!!

Adalberto Álvarez has released a few teasers on his Myspace profile, and a single track found its way to the compilation “Latino vol. 21”. Check it click here: Gonzando el la Habana. Listen to it here: … nice dance track with just the right Adalberto sound. There is another demo safely tugged away in our collection – it is “Si No Vas A Bailar” and is available on Estilo’s page on Myspace.
Adalberto is coming to Denmark on April 9th to play at Train in Århus :-) … so block out that day – luckily, Estilo and I are booked as DJs for this event, and hopefully I also get to assist Steen P in the kitchen in preparing dinner for Adalberto & Co :-) |
Alberto Alberto
is working on a new album... Cuban Alberto Alberto, who lives in Montreal, is working hard to bring out new songs... I am looking forward to hear the results. |
Pupy y los que son son also released an exciting teaser – the track named Proquito el reve is the stuff of great hits… and it moves the dance floor… I also look forward to seeing and listening to the new album.

Los Van Van: sold-out concert in Denmark ,Vega March 1st – OH MY… What a performance – my best Van Van concert experience so far… And yes, I managed to get a last minute ticket (Thank you, Jeanet in Sønderborg.) But what a concert: A high spirited band – with a somewhat exhausted Robert in tow… perhaps he had enjoyed the Swedish public too much?? But Jenny , Lele and particularly Mayito were really up there so it never really was an issue that Mr Hernandez was more laid back on occasions ;-)... They started out as usual - Cheapeando - Tim Pop -Chapeando -Tim Pop – Despues de Todo in the usual sequence… but a new, older song from Llgo Somos Cubanos also found its way to the play list and it was fantastic to hear that one live. It has the longest intro, so I haven’t played it often… but once it gets under way it’s no holds barred and it really gets the dance floor moving for a few minutes. But played live, it just turns out even better and longer and great to hear – and it just turned better yet, when Alexander Abreu came on stage with his trumpet and played a solo so mean everybody lost their breath – even he! He gave it everything he had – what a talent and what an incredibly humble appearance on stage! I also noticed that the trombone player from Danish band Salsa Loca (I’ve forgotten your name – I’M SORRY) snug on stage on a few occasions to play along… Right on! – I bet that was a great experience for him. Songs like Agua were – of course – included, and a host of girls made their way on stage and I have to admit I think it’s dead boring! :( and a terribly long time to spend looking at girls’ behinds… Well, luckily the new song Me Mantengo was delivered in an extended version featuring both Alexander Abreu and some (Danish? I never know…) rap singer – either way, that one is definitely their next hit… looking forward to their new album, which is still in the works – as Mayito told ME personally backstage… the track list is finalized, though, and it reveals that Formell daughter Vanessa is featured in one song – more about that in the next newsletter. The concert lasted about two hours – and yet I missed hearing my personal favourite Soy todo :(... bummer! But kudos to LOS VAN VAN – the world’s greatest salsa band…
Estilo, the lucky bastard, warmed up the crowd to Van Van, living it out on stage and entertained the 1000 strong crowd brimming with expectation for the main act – after the concert, a couple of guest DJs including DJ Salsa Cuba and of course Joaquim himself, after which Estilo brought the night to its end at 2.30 a.m. I admit I am proud of Estilo… Well done, partner |

Juan Formell (band creator) was not in Copenhagen – instead, his son Samuel Formell made a solid presence by the drums, even sneaking in the occasional reggaeton beats. In addition, he made a solo performance like nothing I ever heard from Los Van Van before – all in all this concert presented quite some renewal in the band – which I gather they were in need of… I have been to their concerts five times now and the four of them were almost identical in terms of both sound and track list…

DLG also released a new single – after five years, this band is coming out with a new album. Produced by none less than Sergio George – who also produced the latest Issac Delgado, which must be said to be a TOP production.
London is calling: I have been to London a few times in January and February, partially on personal business ;-) but I have also been trying to get some jobs playing there… I have been to some really cool clubs – and some not-so-cool places, too... :-) ... London is a big city with a huge host of resident DJs… some better than others ;-).. I am certain I will land a job or two before long.
January 6th, Estilo became the father of a wonderful baby girl. She is Estilo’s third child, so we might safely assume daddy has everything under control :-)... Estilo is keeping a low profile for a short while…
New album with El Zorro is coming out in late March. Its name will be: AY COMO ME SUBE....
New hot demo from Paulo FG: Ella No Sabe ;-) Hear it when either of us plays next ;-)
Facebook – oh yes, we found our ways here too ;) a slightly less serious version of Estilo og Salsani ;) take a look, we would love to be your facebook-friend :)))) Look us up as Salsani Salsa-dj.dk (what else ;-) and Estilo as Stig Kahr... and pry into out private lives ;-)
www.salsakalenderen.dk The salsa calendar... Århus and Denmark have a new calendar on www.salsakalender.dk. It is our own local HERO Thomas Rathcke who took matters into his own hands and over a couple of days… converted HTML into a nice, functional salsa calendar. Thomas’ first version, as he himself puts it: There’s coming a bunch more weird and wonderful things on there – he has great ambitions for the site, of course, and hopes to attract many steady users… Way to go, Thomas ;-)

| Klimax... I just shot by Klimax’ Myspace page and accidentally discovered a major photo album from Horsens – that excellent performance of theirs in the Summer 07- and the pictures were my own – THAT’S IT, I am proud they used my pictures… Thank you, Klimax – hope they return to Denmark sometime – for another SMOKING concert |
