NEW CD FROM EL ZORRO

Ay Como Me Sube.... Yes indeed:-)

Now it’s finally time for another newsletter from salsa-dj.dk – unfortunately I have had a lot of problems with my (one and a half years) “old” laptop and busted the doors of a certain retail store for the last few months – which has complicated updating our site and distribution of our newsletter. Fortunately, everything should be up and running again shortly… and I may once again sit down and author some loooooong (too long, some say) newsletters… heheh

A new CD came in my mailbox last week: "Ay como sube" from Martin Lehner – he is the founder of "El Zorro", a super salsa band with roots all the way from Cuba to Switzerland... Martin lives in Switzerland and received an MA in music from the Swiss Jazz School Bern in 1988, and also educated as a trombone player at the Conservatory of Winterthur, Switzerland in 1988 through 1990, and – not to forget – has studied Cuban music in Havana from 1996 – 2002... That sure makes up for a solid musical base. He played in a number of bands / big bands, is a composer, an arranger, and a songwriter… and probably most importantly, he is a trombone player… ;-) El Zorro already released three CDs - La Vida Entera (2002), which is available on iTunes ( click here) - Somos Hermanos (2005), also available on iTunes ( click here)- Volando (2006), also available on iTunes ( click here). The latter was also reviewed on our site by Estilo, check it out here: LINK – I personally have a soft spot for Somos Hermanos, and the title track is still played a lot at times – whenever I do, some dancer comes over and tells me: That’s a damn good song – who is it? That has to be the main tribute to Martin :-) but then again, it IS an Evergreen. Anyway, I am not supposed to be reviewing the old CD again now, but the newest one, Ay como me sube – What a title ;-) and yes, one must admit it does – it really does turn you on. Martin invited Mayito (SMILE), Angel Bonne (ex-Van Van), and Roberto Pulido Gonzales back in the studio once again – which only upgrades the CD further. The musical mix of the CD is nice – it has cool timba songs and ballads which combine to a CD that can be left in the CD player all day without tiring you of its "sound" – I especially enjoy hearing Mayito’s voice clearly on Sabes Que… without too much extraneous sound… but with a soft backing group and the trombones so characteristic to El Zorro – this track is not well suited for the salsateca – but never mind, it’s a winner here on my home stereo.
In terms of genres, the CD ranges from a club mix of Ay, como me sube through pop to the grooviest merentimba track - (merengue timba? – HELP ME MARTIN :-) with a lot of action. Presently, my favourite is definitely El Fenomeno and Cauranta Y Seis - 2 excellent timba tracks with funky beats to them.
It’s very good produced and arranged CD. I would like to have had a track with Yeisel Gonzales Santana singing lead vocal – it sounds like she could sing most people to their knees. But a very nice touch to have a female backing singer – we don’t hear that too often. Perhaps a solo might find its way onto El Zorro’s next CD – which I am 100% certain will come out later - Martin needs to express himself, and all the rest of us get to enjoy it (maybe you, Martin, should get in touch with Vitaly Osmachko – damn, the two of you might bring out something very exceptional together – unless the proverb about “too many chefs…” is also valid in this context. But when it works in Cuba, the thing about everybody helping out and contributing here and there and everywhere – then why not here – you DO live rather close to each other, after all – I would be very eager to set up a playtime date for the two of you ;-) Martin, thank you for the CD – I look forward to experiencing you live one day – perhaps your path bring you by Denmark one day.
Check YouTube for a re-mix of Ay como me sube… and check out the band website here or listen to the CD's here

Other great news.....

Jorge Cordero - Reflexiones
Over Christmas I received the new Jorge Cordero CD in my mailbox…
I spent Christmas – and ehhh Spring (DAMN PC) – listening through a pile of CDs. One of them was Reflexion from Cordero y su team latino… During the first listening, I fell for "Extrano Tu Cuerpo", the second track on the CD – cool track and an exceptional female vocalist. She gives everything and comes across with a powerful and clear voice – which many must envy her.

This track is probably also the most timba-like on the CD – it moves the dance floor (have played it quite a few times) – the other tracks are slightly more laid back and more mainstream – not that it matters – but not such a surprise either. Sound-wise, it’s a good release – it has the somewhat special Cordero sound – light and crisp and slightly "flat" in a good way. There is room for both the hardcore and the softer, “poppier” salsa beats. I might have wished for a REALLY hot cha-cha-cha like the ones I know Cordero may deliver – saw them live once, when they played quite a few cha-cha’s. EXCELLENT concert, it was back when I had only just worn in my first pair of dancing shoes :-)… I no longer remember its venue, just that it was a splendid experience – I DO love the cha-cha-cha :-) But okay – this release is also good without it – definitely – and I look forward to hearing it live. But will "Annet " join you?? DAMN, whe great, Cordero… DAMN… The CD is on sale at cdshoppen here, or you may pick it up from me, when I am out playing. If you want to sample the CD, you may do so here, where you may also find samples from some of the many CDs, Cordero has released or contributed to :) Enjoy… Might we look forward to a live performance in the near future?

New blog for Timba Freaks… Planet Timba . Check out this blog with the newest from all over the world all in one blog compiled by Franz Gamarra – A Peruvian in London whose heart is lost to the world of TIMBA. Franz still has his first visit to Cuba ahead of him, but I wish he’ll get there before long ;-) Until then he will have to collect news of timba and the like from around the world and post it to the blog. If you have any news or inside scoops, I am sure he would love to hear from you. If you have a Facebook profile, you may also add the “Planet Timba”-application to stay updated on the latest news – clever, eh :-) Find the application on my profile (Salsani Salsa-dj.dk) or on Franz Gamarra's profile…

PLANET TIMBA

Cuban music is our passion

April 23th I am back in London. This time I am going to see Spanish Harlem Orchestra – which I am really looking forward to (Thank you, DJ LUBI – who I know from both Facebook and mySpace – it’ll be good to see him IRL. Lubi is a well established DJ – see his mySpace profile here and i look forward to hear him in action and maybe learn/steal a thing or two ;-)
First time I came to London in Spring, I went to El Grande to hear Richard play – he made such an impression on me that I have asked him if I couldn’t get a little play time in (I believe) his own club, La Clave Cubana – and sweet Richard accepted! So i am looking forward to this. I am also playing in Cuban Connection where DJ Javier and DJ Sol are resident DJs - Thanks to Cuban Connection too :-)

Alex Cuba was nominated for Best World Music Album at the 2008 Juno Awards! AND HE WON !!!!!! congratulations Alex...
His latest album "Agua del Pozo" is available on iTunes, by the way, click here:
Adonis Puentes is also coming out with a new album soon… check out his myspace and listen to both old and newer material click here

Adalberto Álvarez live concert in DK

Adalberto Álvarez live concert at Train, 9th of April.
I admit it: Once again, I am in awe! What a performance – it’s still in my blood :-)… Estilo and I were the support act before the concert – there and in place in good time as we both brought our newly purchased copies of the latest Adalberto Álvarez release "Gozando en la Habana" – actually I hadn’t even had time to hear it before the concert – but judging from Estilo’s MSN, he had listened to it all day – but we also wanted them autographed, so we introduced ourselves to Mr. Álvarez. His eyes almost popped from his head when he saw the CDs – he looked up, laughed and said: Where did you get that? I haven’t even seen it yet!!! Then everything was taken apart, inspected and admired and iih and uuh and aah and oohhh and the band was almost fighting each other to see it – Estilo and I got our autographs and a bit more – and I won’t even go into details on their reaction when they saw Estilo with one of Adalberto’s first vinyls in his hands – except that the cheering was incredible. And of course Adalberto autographed that, too – Estilo had actually brought a minor pile of Adalberto vinyls to the concert – the NERD :-)… The band took to the stage and started out with Mi Linda Habanera – and I hadn’t even noticed because I was still at the mixer, starting to eye Estilo and thinking how tacky it was to play Adalberto Àlvarez now – when I realized that it was the band playing! Hahahah… and then the party started with all the great hits from the latest CD's, Mi Linda Habanera, Lección De Amor, Un Pariente En El Campo,Para Bailar Casino,- Loco Enamorado,Y Qué Tú Quieres Que Te Den, blaring from the sound system.
- all the good ones were played and I could hardly put my arms down from pure excitement – I had been waiting for so long to witness a live performance from this band – so my excitement just hit the roof in no time. A happy and optimistic band, too – and yet so very down to earth… After a few songs, Adalberto announced kiddingly that we needed to dance some – he didn’t think we were doing a very good job, and now they were up there looking their best, so couldn’t we please show some enthusiasm ;-) hahha – that helped – or maybe the crowd was just too stunned by all the good music… but it DID help. First set concluded with Gonzando en la habana – the title track from the new CD – and just before starting it, Mr. Àlvarez looked down at me and said: "this song is for you" – and I promise you my arms hit the ceiling right then and there… Wow – nothing could beat this. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Mr. Álvarez – I feel so very honoured :-)… It was a happy and high spirited band – we clapped them back on stage for two extras and quite a few of them stayed for the after-party and heated up the dance floor to Estilo’s and my music ;-) What an experience… and a huge “thank you” to the LaTimba-boys – who had made such a good job of bringing Adalberto to Århus. Well done, boys.View our pictures from the concert here

My review of the CD is scheduled for the next newsletter – but I can already recommend it warmly, it’s a definite MUST-HAVE in your collection.

New hot demo from Paulo FG: Ella No Sabe ;-) Hear it when either of us plays next ;-)
Facebook – oh yes, we found our ways here too ;) a slightly less serious version of Estilo og Salsani ;) take a look, we would love to be your facebook-friend :)))) Look us up as Salsani Salsa-dj.dk (what else ;-) and Estilo as Stig Kahr... and pry into out private lives ;-)
www.salsakalenderen.dk The salsa calendar... Århus and Denmark have a new calendar on www.salsakalender.dk. It is our own local HERO Thomas Rathcke who took matters into his own hands and over a couple of days… converted HTML into a nice, functional salsa calendar. Thomas’ first version, as he himself puts it: There’s coming a bunch more weird and wonderful things on there – he has great ambitions for the site, of course, and hopes to attract many steady users… Way to go, Thomas ;-)

Our website Salsa-dj.dk was supposed to have become available in English, too – but due to technical difficulties and my lacking Dreamweaver skills have postponed the upgrade (- but it should be just around the corner, now – I hope. Check out the site and our charts, where Estilo as always is first with the latest… or our photo album

Finally, a huge CONGRATULATIONS to Vitali Osmashko the founder of Vitaly Y su Timba Habanera, who has just become the father of a baby girl. Congratulations to you from up here – I am still looking forward to his other soon-to-come CD delivery – so far I have heard a synth demo and more recently app. 25 seconds of recorded materials – and it’s promising – very promising. I cannot wait for Vitaly to reveal who are contributing to the CD, because I still can’t hear it – at least not (quite) well enough to be sure :-). I do have my suspicions – but I hold them back a while longer… as agreed :-)That’s it, folks – at least for now. Thank you all for the sweet comments and mails, we received after the last newsletter.
