SUMMER MEANS SALSA CAMP...

SALSA-DJ. DK is going salsa camping....

New music is being released all over the place this Spring and Summer and what a thrill… New CDs from my favourite spot, Cuba… And Summer also hit Denmark big time, and all salsa dancers have felt the tropical moods in the salsateks of this otherwise cold North.

And in just about a month’s time, it’ll be time for SalsaCamp - probably the largest salsa event in Denmark when during 2 weeks 300 people will dance their ways through a myriad of workshops lead by instructors from both Denmark and abroad.
Again this year, I will DJ the evening parties along with Estilo. And I really look forward to rock the dance floors for two weeks… check out the pictures from last year’s camp here. There will also be room for a couple of visiting Djs: DJ Rozman and DJ Charanga (Norway) have agreed to play a little, too.

El Zorro released an interesting CD “Ay Como Me Sube“ earlier this year - read my review of it here - has been to Cuba to make a very nice video for the track “El fenomeno” - watch it here on El Zorro’s web site. And listen to the CD “Ay Como Me Sube” here. Check YouTube for a re-mix of Ay como me sube… and check out the band website here or listen to the CD's here.

And then it happened: Lead singer “Pepito” Jose Gomez of Pupy y Los Que Son Son left the band in the middle of a tour. The tour has been postponed a few times, and presently I have no news on whether it will go on as planned. Pupy y Los Que Son Son were coming out with a new and highly anticipated CD. It’ll be interesting whether it is still being released or if it has been moth-balled too…
Pepito is one of my favourite singers, and if you can’t wait until we find out whether he’s on Pupy’s coming album, you may hear him sing a couple of songs on the new Soneros all stars CD “La timba soy Yo“. Pepito also appears on the legendary CD “Desnudar Tu Cuerpo” by Vitali Y Su Timba Habanera.
Desnudar Tu Cuerpo” has received much praise from me (read here and here). Actually, I like this CD so much, I have now obtained distribution rights to it here in Denmark - and I wholeheartedly recommend you get yourself a copy of it. I spent two years locating this much-overlooked CD and eventually found it with its originator, Vitali Osmansko himself. Over the last half year, I have been doing some legwork to re-invigorate sales of this album, as I firmly believe it deserved a comeback, not to speak of its ultimate breakthrough. The title track may be heard on my myspace here or on my facebook "Salsani salsa-dj.dk"
I now hold 20 CDs signed by Vitali, selling these at 20€ (plus shipping) - e-mail me at salsani@salsa-dj.dk, if you want one. You may also get an un-signed CD for 16€ (plus shipping).
Do not miss this unique opportunity to get you own copy of this rare CD. I only have a limited stock, so they’re sold on a first come, first served basis.

Besides Pepito, a.o. Mayito (Los Van Van), Tony Perez (see a crazy piano solo by him here), Alexander Abreu, El Gallo, Amaray (Manolito), Coco Freemann also contribute on “Desnudar Tu Cuerpo” - a real all stars line-up! Also, view several videos of song from the album on Vitaly y su Timba Habanera’s Myspace page here, and listen to the music and watch the funny videos.

If you live in London, you may save the shipping charges by ordering from me and arrange picking it up from me on my next visit to London, where I go regularly. Of course, I also bring the CDs whenever I play… I also still hold small stocks of Kent Søgaard’s salsa practice CD (in Danish), Latin Dance Band and last - but certainly not least - Jorge Cordero “Reflexiones“. Feel free to e-mail me, if you have any questions or want to place an order: salsani@salsa-dj.dk

Adalberto Alvarez : "Gonzando En La Havana"

Adalberto Álvarez , Gonzando En La Havana. Released April 2008. 10 songs + 2 potpourris
Adalberto Álvarez Y Son … a long awaited CD which I had not even heard all through before the April 9 concert here in Århus, Denmark. Adalberto had released a teaser on the Latino vol. 21 compilation entitled “Gonzando en la Havana”, which moved on to become the title track of the new CD. This particular song also went on to obtain its very own significance to your truly (read the concert review to understand why).

This is a real Adalberto Álvarez CD. The sound is exactly how it should be - easily recognisable and just the right Adalberto sound. At first, when I read through the track list, I felt a bit let down when I saw that the CD included 2 potpourris - stealing the precious room from new tracks. But I must admit that I am pleased to re-discover songs like “Dale como e”, title track from his 1993-album and sung by Jorge Luis Rojas. Ever since the previous CD, “Mi Linda Habanera”, - which is also a must-have in you CD collection - the musical line-up has undergone some changes. Among other changes is a new lead vocalist Yuraldys Lago “Yuri” - and I must admit that his high “boysoprano” voice hits the nerve - I like hearing his voice without too many effects added to it - it is pure and clean and MEGA loud / high (høj)… well spotted, Sr. Álvarez J The CD is also an anniversary CD. Sr. Álvarez has been going strong for 35 years… You may find his complete discography on Timba.com here.
The CD flows over with Álvarez on by vocals, strings, piano, bongo and pailas. And I cannot keep track of all the family relations on this one… but really, that doesn’t matter much, because in the end it is the music that really counts. And that they know in this band, family or not. Check out Adalberto Álvarez’ new web site here

Michel Maza - "Como gato en angora"
Here is another long awaited CD… the previous “Que hablen los hablados“… an excellent CD, so expectations to this new release were sky high. And I am somewhat disappointed with Michel Maza (former lead vocalist in Charanga Habanera)… That said, I still have good things to say about this CD. Good timba and nice rhythms and tracks like “Que les besen los pies” and “Muero Sin Tu Amor” move the dance floor. The CD also features a Cha-Cha-Cha, and while I haven’t played in public yet, I look forward to doing just that. But the CD lacks hits I may hum along to. Michel Maza still has an excellent voice which is in very good shape on this CD - but that should be expected from such an experienced singer. The arrangements are well done, and I do enjoy the occasional refinements… and it’s amazing to be able to hear it - considering that I have absolutely no clue regarding what this Angora is singing… ;-)) Producer Luis A. Dominguez has written most tracks on the CD. One, “Pa que usted lo cante” (the Cha-Cha-Cha), is written by pianist Maikel Gracia, who has also been the musical supervisor of the CD.

Manolito Simonet Y Su Trabuco
Manolito Y su Trabuco - Control
Fabulous CD from Manolito - and Amaray is luckily enough still in the band ;-) Earlier this year, rumours were that he was on his way out and had been sighted rehearsing with Los Van Van - uh uh! Well, he may have just been stopping by for coffee - but that wasn‘t part of any of the rumours at that time hehe… Some times rumours are just - rumours. Even I have been the subject of rumours ;-) and I have had to realize that what I write is read and interpreted in many places and in many ways hehe. Anyway, I am reviewing this wonderful CD and not my personal life here…
This CD, too, has found room for a potpourri and a real ballad with crooner Andy Montanez. Actually, two huge hits are found on this CD - one has found its way to my top ten chart, “el relampago“, the other is on Estilo‘s chart, “La Habana me lama“. Both songs are great, and they shake up the dance floor. There has also been made room for a tune from Amaray’s own CD “locos tu besos” , which was released last year largely unnoticed. But after Manolito has now made a cover of this tune, the difference in class is evident. Manolito really knows his business. And if you really pay attention, you’ll find a 3-5 seconds bit of Issac Delgado’s “La Formular” in the montuno part of “Loco tu beso”… very beautifully immersed. That’s playing at a higher level… Perhaps Issac came around for coffee that day hehehe./Salsani 08
Amaray
While in Cuba (in 2007), I was surprised to see Ricardo Amaray (lead vocalist from Manolito's band) had released a solo CD. Amaray is one of my absolute favourite salsa singers - he is also an excellent song writer, he has written for both Charanga Habanera and Manolito. Manolito produced Amaray’s solo debut album, which I find largely disappointing for it is just pop and not salsa.
The CD has a poor pop version of "Comunícate", one of Manolito’s major 2006 hits. While I was listening through the CD, it just went from bad to worse - until the final tune surprised in a positive way. A nice Cha-Cha-Cha "Se me ocurrió el Sábado" with Cuban sound, strings, rap and great breaks - the only drawback: The song lasts only 1 minute 58 seconds

New CD from Manolin coming out… I have eavesdropped on the new Manolin CD - very promising… a reviews will be included in the next newsletter.

DLG also released a new single – after five years, this band is coming out with a new album. Produced by none less than Sergio George – who also produced the latest Issac Delgado, which must be said to be a TOP production. This CD'en is already available in shops.

Nice new web site: Erodes & Tenna now offer salsa in Horsens. See it here - and congratulations :-)

Maikel Blanco
also has a new CD out, with old stuff … quite strange since he has released a number of teasers. Most lately with “ Anda Y Pegata”, which hits on dance floors both here in Århus and in London. Butu this track is regrettably not included on the CD. I listened it though very quickly and must admit I am somewhat disappointed with both the songs and the overall quality… Maikel has been labelled the new Cuban star… So get it together, Maikel!

Elvis Manuel - Cuba’s reggaeton star - is assumed lost at sea along with several others during an attempt to escape to Miami - the promised land. Rumours were that Manual had been promised a major record deal. Elvis Manuel’s DJ and mother survived the shipwreck and are now back in Cuba… Read the full story here.

Facebook – oh yes, we found our ways here too ;) a slightly less serious version of Estilo og Salsani ;) take a look, we would love to be your facebook-friend :)))) Look us up as Salsani Salsa-dj.dk (what else ;-) and Estilo as Stig Kahr... and pry into out private lives ;-)

Soneros All Stars : La Timba Soy Yo
The Cuban concept’s 3rd CD has just been released, it is named “ La Timba Soy yo”.
And as the CD proclaims, Soneros All Stars - this, too, is a top star line-up - Pupy Pedroso has produced and Roelvis "Bombón" Reyes has arranged . Pupy’s influence is obvious - his particular song writing with a wall of rhythms and no-barrels-held on all instruments makes your blood boil and your sweat spring if you’re on the dance floor. And it’s such a pleasure hearing Pepito’s fantastic voice, coming through loud and clear.
The CD is primarily traditional Cuban music heavily mixed , as the title reveals, with hot timba beats. Other artists appearing are Mandy Abreu, El Sinsonte and Maria Cristina Garcia - and Swedish tres player Janne Bogdan must be mentioned too, of course. Janne Bogdan is the primus motor for this row of CD's with the Soneros All Stars. And this time it is primarily the cooperation between him and Pupy that has fostered this wonderful CD. Janne Bogdan previously toured with Elio Reve, who died in a car crash in 1997.
The two other Soneros All Stars CDs are “Dime Nague!” (2005) Marianao (2006).
